The largest library in the Northwest Territories is in Yellowknife but the Head Office of the Territorial Library is in Hay River on the south shore of Great Slave Lake. There are a number of small libraries scattered across the vast territories. Each of them has a basic collection which is supplemented from Hay River on a rotating basis, shipped by plane, every few months.
In the past, Pi Phi funds have bought special requirement items such audio equipment to record the memories of elders and books in the Inuit language as well as many more ordinary library books and tapes.
In August 2002, we received a note from the Head Territorial Librarian which said;

"Thanks once again to the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for their very generous $1500.00 donation. May I assure you that the wonderful generosity of your Fraternity over the past 30 years has been very much appreciated by the patrons of the NWT Public Library Services. In 2000, we started a project to develop a special collection designed to focus on women's issues. We expected that it would take a couple of years and we are finding that it will probably take four. This year, the monetary donation will continue to purchase material devoted to women's issues. I had the opportunity in March 2001 to visit your St. Louis office and showed a few of the staff some pictures of the NWT and your libraries. Should the Fraternity be able to contribute additional funds this year, we would use the money to update the children's medical/health section. The extensive advances in the health field in the past few years are now being reflected in a lot of new children's material. We need to catch up. Again, thanks to the members of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for their continuing
support to libraries that benefit from Arrow in the Arctic. It is effective
and very much appreciated." |
